How do I turn on location sharing for Clean Smarts?

Clean Smarts may need your phone's location to confirm that you are at the work site when you clock in, clock out, or use a scan point. Some locations also use background geofence monitoring to clock you out after you leave.

Applies to: Employees using the Clean Smarts mobile app at locations that require location sharing or geofencing.

Before You Start

Ask your supervisor which geofence rule your work site uses. The required access level is different:

Location check at clock in and clock out: Choose While Using the App on iPhone or Allow only while using the app on Android, and turn on precise location.
Automatic clock-out after you leave: Choose Always on iPhone or Allow all the time on Android, and turn on precise location. Clean Smarts needs background access while you are clocked in so it can monitor the work-area boundary when the app is not open.

You do not need Always access just because your company records your position when you clock in or out. The app asks for background access only when the location uses active geofence monitoring.

Privacy: Although the phone setting is called Always or Allow all the time, Clean Smarts starts active geofence monitoring only for a checked-in shift that requires it and stops monitoring after clock-out. You can read the Clean Smarts Privacy Policy in the app under MORE > Privacy Policy.

Respond to the Clean Smarts Prompts

The app normally requests location when you try to clock in at a location that requires it.

In Clean Smarts, start your normal clock-in.
When Location Needed appears, read the explanation and continue if you agree.
In the phone permission prompt, allow location and keep precise location on.
If the site uses automatic clock-out, allow the additional background-location request.

If background access is still missing, Clean Smarts shows a page with Open app settings and the instruction to choose Permissions > Location > Allow all the time / Always. The exact Settings path differs between iPhone and Android; use the steps below.

Turn On Location Sharing on iPhone

Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
Turn Location Services on.
Scroll down and tap Clean Smarts.
Choose the access your site requires: - While Using the App for clock-in and clock-out location checks. - Always for automatic clock-out after leaving the geofence.
Turn Precise Location on.
Return to Clean Smarts and try the clock-in or clock-out again.

If Always is not listed yet, return to Clean Smarts and start a clock-in at a site that uses automatic clock-out. Accept the app's background-location explanation and permission request, then check the iPhone settings again.

Turn On Location Sharing on Android

Turn on the phone's main Location setting.
Touch and hold the Clean Smarts app icon, then tap App info. You can also open Settings > Apps > Clean Smarts.
Tap Permissions > Location.
Choose the access your site requires: - Allow only while using the app for clock-in and clock-out location checks. - Allow all the time for automatic clock-out after leaving the geofence.
Turn Use precise location on, if your Android version shows that switch.
Return to Clean Smarts and try the clock-in or clock-out again.

On some Android phones, Allow all the time does not appear in the first permission pop-up. Open the app's Location permission page in Settings and choose it there. Menu names can vary by phone manufacturer.

If Clean Smarts asks for Physical activity or motion access during a background-geofence clock-in, allow it when possible. This helps the app detect movement efficiently. Declining this permission does not block clock-in, but background geofence detection may be less reliable.

What Happens After You Allow Location

For a punch-time location check, Clean Smarts reads your location when you clock in or out. It does not start background geofence monitoring.
For automatic clock-out, Clean Smarts monitors the geofence while you are clocked in, including when the app is in the background or closed.
If you leave the work area, the app warns that you will be clocked out in five minutes. Returning before the five minutes pass cancels that clock-out.
Turning off Clean Smarts location permission while you are clocked in at an actively monitored site can clock you out.
Clean Smarts may ask for motion or physical-activity permission. That permission helps background monitoring use movement more efficiently and does not replace location permission.

Troubleshooting

Clean Smarts is not listed under location permissions. Start a clock-in at a location that requires GPS so the app can show its permission request.
The permission is allowed, but the app says location services are off. Confirm the phone's main Location Services or Location setting is on, precise location is enabled, and Clean Smarts has the access level your site requires. Then return to the app and retry.
Clock-in works, but automatic clock-out does not. Change the permission from while-using access to Always or Allow all the time. Also allow Clean Smarts notifications so you can receive geofence warnings.
Background monitoring is unreliable on Android. Open App info > Battery or App battery usage and remove restrictions for Clean Smarts. Labels such as Unrestricted or Don't optimize vary by manufacturer.
The app says you are not on location even with precise location on. This is usually a GPS or geofence issue, not a permission issue. Move near a window or step outside, wait for a fresh reading, and retry. If it happens repeatedly at one site, ask your supervisor to review that site's map pin and geofence radius.
The problem started after a phone or app update. Recheck the Clean Smarts location, precise-location, notification, and battery settings. Then reopen the app and retry.
You denied the request earlier. Use the iPhone or Android Settings steps above. The phone may stop showing the permission pop-up after repeated denials.
