How do I set up break compliance rules?

You can create custom break settings and apply them to specific shifts. This is useful for managing compliance with state labor laws or setting internal break policies.

Create a break setting

  1. Click your profile in the bottom-left corner and go to Company Settings or use the search bar (Ctrl+K) to look it up.

  2. Go to the Timekeeping section and scroll down to Break Settings.

  3. Click Add/edit break settings to create a new break setting and give it a name (e.g., "Lunch Break").

  4. Configure the following options as needed:

    • Notify employees when a break is about to start.

    • Require a note if an employee skips a break, so you have documentation that the opportunity was provided and the employee chose not to take it.

  5. Click Add Rule to define the break details:

    • Set whether the break is paid or unpaid.

    • Set when the break should start (e.g., 4 hours after the shift begins).

    • Set the length of the break (e.g., 30 minutes).

  6. Click Create. You can add multiple rules to a single setting if needed.

Note: Clean Smarts includes a sample California break setting as a reference. If you operate in California, review and verify it against your current state requirements before applying it.

Apply the break setting to a shift

  1. Go to Manage Locations and open the location you want to update.

  2. Go to Shifts and Inspections and click on the shift you want to apply the break setting to.

  3. Click the Budget section and select the Meal and break settings you want to apply from the dropdown underneath.

  4. Save the shift.
